Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, meets with Father Nguyen Van Ly at the Ha Nam Prison in Hanoi

March 4, 2013 - Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Deepak Obhrai recently traveled to Vietnam where he met with Father Nguyen Van Ly who was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment for his participation in pro-democracy movements. During the meeting Mr. Obhrai expressed Canada’s ongoing concern for his wellbeing and the situation of human rights in Vietnam, particularly with respect to civil and political rights including freedom of expression.

The Parliamentary Secretary has spoken to the human rights situation in Vietnam many times in Parliament calling upon the Vietnamese authorities to “respect all of their international obligations, including freedom of expression, and to release those who are imprisoned for peacefully expressing their opinion.”
